James Gunn Says He’d Love to Work With The Flash’s Grant Gustin

James Gunn wants to work with Grant Gustin, who played Barry Allen in The CW’s The Flash.

On Threads, Gunn responded to a comment requesting that he cast Gustin as one of the heroes in the forthcoming DCU.

“Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project,” Gunn said. “But of course I’d love to work with him at some point.”

Gustin is best known for starring in all nine seasons of The CW’s The Flash. He played the character in a number of other Arrowverse series, including Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman, while he also cameoed in an episode of HBO Max’s Titans.

In a video shared on Instagram by @arrowverse.canaries, Gustin said, “If James Gunn asked me to play The Flash, I’d do it again. I trust James Gunn.”

What DCU projects have been announced so far?

Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU officially begins in 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series. The voice cast for Creature Commandos includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Steve Agee as John Economos, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller,  and Anya Chalotra as Circe.

Following that, Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, María Gabriela de Faría, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Terence Rosemore, Edi Gathegi, and Sara Sampaio.

While no Flash-centered project has been announced at this time, other upcoming DCU films include The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. A number of television series — including Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Peacemaker Season 2, and more — are also in the works.
