Superman: Legacy Starts Filming Next Week, Warner Bros. Hoping for a Box Office Hit

Superman: Legacy starts filming next week.

Per Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced in a Q4 earnings call that Superman: Legacy, which is written and directed by James Gunn, will officially go into production next week.

“Bottom line, the studio has really been underperforming — including at the end of the year where we had some real struggle — but we’re very optimistic about this year, and it has given us the chance to have a lot of upside in the next two years,” Zaslav said during the call.

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels specifically cited 2023’s The Color Purple and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as box office disappointments for the studio.

Wiedenfels added, “On the film side, obviously this is going to continue to be a hit-driven business. Just last year was a great example, with the greatest success in the film studio’s history, and some real challenges across the industry on the on the superhero side.”

Who stars in Gunn’s Superman: Legacy?

The news comes just one day after Gunn shared a behind-the-scenes photo of the Superman: Legacy cast following the DCU movie’s table read. “Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day,” Gunn wrote.

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

The movie is the first feature film in Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU; although, prior to that, an animated Creature Commandos series will be released later this year.

Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
