Sony Pictures has shared the first official clip from Madame Web ahead of the Marvel movie’s theatrical release next month.
The first Madame Web clip (via DiscussingFilm on X) opens on main protagonist Cassandra “Cassie” Webb (Dakota Johnson) riding a subway train. Cassie, a clairvoyant, has a premonition of Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) murdering three other women on the train — Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced). Cassie instructs the others to leave the train before Sims can actually reach their car.
Of course, Cassie — aka Madame Web — is destined to join forces with Julia, Mattie, and Anya. In the comics, Julia (full name Julia Eugenia Cornwall Carpenter) was the second Spider-Woman — not to mention the second and current Madame Web. Meanwhile, Mattie was the third Spider-Woman. Anya’s superhero alias is Araña.
What is Madame Web about?
S.J. Clarkson directs Madame Web from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. The upcoming film serves as the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) — following Venom (2018), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), and Morbius (2022). In addition to Johnson, Sweeney, O’Connor, and Merced, it stars Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet.
An official synopsis reads as follows: “‘Meanwhile, in another universe…’ In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures … if they can all survive a deadly present.”
Madame Web opens in theaters on Wednesday, February 14. Up next for the SSU is Kraven the Hunter, which opens on August 30. The currently-untitled Venom 3 follows suit on November 8.
