The Marvels Producer: Captain Marvel Brings Out Nick Fury’s Lighter Side

Nick Fury, as portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has a reputation as a hardened authority figure. However, his dynamic with Captain Marvel in The Marvels may let fans see him in a different light, according to producer Mary Livanos.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Livanos discussed how the upcoming sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel will approach Fury as a character. She credits Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers with coaxing some fun out of him: “What’s great about Nick Fury when paired with Captain Marvel is that it brings out a lightness to him that we really only got to experience in that first Captain Marvel movie.”

“It’s really their relationship that brings out a lot of fun in each other,” Livanos added. “He’s great. He’s wonderful.”

The Marvels rekindles an old friendship between Fury and Carol

Jackson has been playing Fury since Phase One of the MCU, an integral figure who brought the first team of Avengers together. Captain Marvel, which is set in the 1990s, introduced a younger version of the character starting out in his career at S.H.I.E.L.D. and showed that he and Carol have a long history together.

The Marvels serves as a sequel not only to Captain Marvel, but also to the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, starring Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. The third member of the titular team, Monica Rambeau/Photon, was introduced as a child in Captain Marvel. Teyonah Parris took up the mantle as an older Monica in the 2021 miniseries WandaVision.

Nia DaCosta directs The Marvels from a script she co-wrote with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. In addition to the main trio, the film’s cast includes many new and returning MCU stars such as Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, Park Seo-joon, Lashana Lynch, Randall Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh.

The Marvels hits United States theaters on November 10, 2023. Tickets are available now.
