Amazon MGM Studios is planning a sequel to Sylvester Stallone‘s 2022 anti-superhero action movie Samaritan.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon is moving forward on Samaritan 2 with Stallone back in the title role as part of a deal the star finalized before the SAG-AFTRA strike. Additionally, Stallone will serve as producer with partner Braden Aftergood under the star’s Balboa Productions banner. The first movie’s screenwriter, Bragi F. Schut, returns to pen the sequel. Schut is also executive producing alongside Adam Rosenberg. It is unknown if original Samaritan helmer Julius Avery will return to the director’s chair.
Samaritan was Stallone’s fourth venture in the superhero genre following, his performance in 1995’s Judge Dredd, his supporting role as Stakar Ogord in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and his voiceover performance as King Shark in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Samaritan was initially slated for a theatrical release before the COVID-19 pandemic put paid to those plans. Amazon would release the movie on Prime Video after purchasing studio MGM in 2021. Despite mixed reviews from critics, Samaritan was the streamer’s number one movie for three weeks in a row.
The story of Samaritan
Based on the Mythos Comics graphic novels by Bragi Schut, Marc Olivent, and Renzo Podesta, Samaritan stars Stallone as Joe Smith, a Granite City recluse. Joe’s 13-year-old neighbor, Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton), deduces that he is a presumed dead superhero from 25 years prior. With crime on the rise, Sam tries to convince Joe to come out of retirement and use his super strength to save the city. The movie co-stars Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco, Moisés Arias, and Martin Starr.
Samaritan 2 does not have a release date.
