Sony’s Madame Web Film Adds Mike Epps To the Cast

The cast of Madame Web is making room for even more familiar talent. According to Deadline, Mike Epps is the latest addition to Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man offshoot, but the report doesn’t say which character he’s playing in the film.

Epps is primarily known for his work in comedy, having appeared in films like Next Friday, Friday After Next, All About the Benjamins, and Dolemite is My Name. He currently stars on the Netflix sitcom The Upshaws, which premiered its second season last week. However, Madame Web won’t be Epps’ first action franchise. He previously appeared as L.J. Wade in 2004’s Resident Evil: Apocalypse and its 2007 sequel, Resident Evil: Extinction.

Madame Web will mark the live-action debut of its title character, who has been an ally of Spider-Man since her first appearance in 1980. The classic incarnation of the character, Cassandra Webb, was an elderly woman who possessed psychic abilities and required a life-support system that resembled a spider’s web. Years later, Cassandra passed her abilities onto former Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter, who also inherited her predecessor’s blindness. Dakota Johnson is portraying Sony’s version of the character, although it’s not clear if she’s playing Cassandra or Julia.

The upcoming film will also be Sony’s second MCU-adjacent Marvel movie of 2023. The first, Kraven the Hunter, hits theaters in January. So far, the supporting cast also includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, and Emma Roberts. S.J. Clarkson is directing the movie from a screenplay by Morbius writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.

Sony will release Madame Web in theaters on July 7, 2023.
