Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Hits HBO Max Next Week

The future of the Wizarding World has been in question ever since Fantastic Beats: The Secrets of Dumbledore opened last month to mixed critical reception and underwhelming box office returns. The sequel’s lukewarm financial performance suggests that many longtime Harry Potter fans chose to stay home once the early reviews started pouring in. But soon, those same viewers will be able to pass judgment from the comfort of their own couches. Warner Bros. has confirmed that The Secrets of Dumbledore will begin streaming on HBO Max next Wednesday, May 30.

Set five years after the last movie, The Secrets of Dumbledore features the return of Jude Law as Dumbledore. Unable to directly engage his former lover, the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen), he once again sends Newt Scamander.

Unfortunately, the promise of a climactic showdown between good and evil didn’t do much to fill theater seats. Although the film opened at #1 in its first weekend, it suffered a 67% drop in the week that followed, and its trajectory hasn’t improved. So far, The Secrets of Dumbledore has only managed to gross $388 million against a $200 million budget. That makes it the lowest-grossing Wizarding World entry in the 20-year history of the franchise.

Setbacks aside, WB has no intention of leaving the Wizarding World behind. New Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav reportedly still intends to develop new Harry Potter content for HBO Max. In fact, he even plans to meet with Rowling in the future to discuss ideas.
