Sony’s Spider-Verse 3 Is Now Called Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

Sony’s Spider-Verse 3 Is Now Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

A few days before CinemaCon, Sony Pictures pushed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from October 7 to June 2, 2023.  At the time, the third movie in the Spider-Verse trilogy was still called Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 2. However, Sony announced at CinemaCon that the third film will now be called Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse when it arrives in theaters on March 29, 2024.

While speaking with EW, screenwriters and executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller teased the larger scale of the Spider-Verse sequels. They said that Across the Spider-Verse is “way, way, way bigger than the last one.” The sequel will feature 240 characters, six different universes “so far,” and “the largest crew of any animated film ever with 1,000 people working on the film. By comparison, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had 40 characters, and only 800 crew members.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Sony also screened 15 minutes from Across the Spider-Verse. If you don’t want to know any spoilers, then scroll down to the end of the post. This is your last SPOILER WARNING.

The footage reintroduced Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 from the post-credits scene in the first film. Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman was also introduced as a pregnant heroine, mirroring a development from her comic book counterpart. However, most of the footage followed Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen. In her world, Gwen’s father, George Stacey, is the police chief and initially unaware of his daughter’s double life. But when George tries to arrest Gwen for the murder of Peter Parker, she unmasks herself. That moment comes directly from the Spider-Gwen comics.

Meanwhile, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and his parents are seen at a parent-teacher gathering at his school as he considers his prospects for college.
