David Cronenberg Revisits Sci-Fi Body Horror In Crimes of the Future
It’s been eight years since David Cronenberg had a film in theaters, but that’s going to change this summer when Crimes of the Future arrives. And if you were expecting something weird with a touch of sci-fi and body horror, then you’ve already seen Cronenberg’s previous films. Long time Cronenberg fans may recall that he already made a movie called Crimes of the Future in 1970. But this new film is neither a remake nor a re-imagining of the original. Instead, it’s something new and horrifying.
After teaming with Viggo Mortensen in A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, Cronenberg cast him in the lead of this film as well. Mortensen plays Saul Tenser, a performance artist and true believer in the idea of humanity’s artificially enhanced evolution. He wants people to see his body changing in strange and unusual ways. Because in his mind, he represents the future.

Léa Seydoux co-stars in the film as Saul’s partner, Caprice, while Kristen Stewart plays their enemy, Timlin. It’s Timlin’s job to report back on Saul and Caprice’s activities to the National Organ Registry. But if the trailer is any indication, Timlin is also into some freaky body modifications as well.
Crimes of the Future will be in completion at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. It will hit theaters in June.
