The Guardians of the Galaxy big-screen comeback is still over a year away. But the team’s next adventure is already making history. Writer/director James Gunn recently took to social media to announce that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has officially broken an industry record for the amount of practical effects used on a single film or TV production. Just heard from our makeup folks at @LegacyEffects that yesterday #GotGVol3 officially passed the World Record for “the most makeup appliances created for a single production” (surpassing The Grinch). Congrats, guys! Thanks for keeping practical effects alive!

As Gunn noted, the record was previously held by Ron Howard’s 2000 adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, whose Oscar-winning makeup team was led by the legendary Rick Baker. Aside from dressing up Jim Carrey as the title character (an experience Carrey later said was like being “buried alive”), the film’s makeup department also had to fit everyone else in the cast with their own prosthetic noses to play the Whos of Whoville.

Although many of their characters have been CGI creations, both of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films have been praised for utilizing practical effects as often as possible instead of relying on CGI and motion capture like other MCU movies. In any case, this latest achievement proves that all of the crew’s hard work paid off. And it’s bound to get fans more excited to see what they have planned for the third installment.
Gunn recently shared that less than six weeks remains until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wraps production. Plot details are still under wraps, but we already know that at least two new additions are joining the fray in the sequel, including Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock. Peacemaker breakout Chukwudi Iwuji also has a role in the film as an “extremely powerful” character.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
