Chris Pine Says He’s Waiting To See Star Trek 4’s Script

When Paramount and J.J. Abrams announced a new Star Trek movie last month, the news surprised just about everyone, including the actors themselves. Regardless, at least one cast member sounds excited to return to the deck of the Enterprise, as long as he gets to see a script first. While speaking with Variety, Chris Pine gave an update on the status of Star Trek 4.

Paramount confirmed Star Trek 4’s 2023 release date during an investor event held in February, along with the promise that the Kelvin timeline cast would return. But later reports claimed that most of the cast weren’t given a heads-up about the announcement beforehand or the studio’s plans to start shooting by the end of the year. On the red carpet for the premiere of his new film, All the Old Knives, Pine backed up this account. Pine also revealed that he’s waiting to read the latest draft of the screenplay.

“I think everybody was like, ‘Did you hear about this?’ [Laughs]. We’re usually the last people to find out, but I do know we’re all excited,” said Pine. “Whenever they want to send us a script, we’re ready for it.”

Pine was originally expected to reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk in an earlier version of Star Trek 4 that would have seen his character travel back in time and team up with his onscreen father, George Kirk (played by Chris Hemsworth). Paramount seems to be heading in a new direction with WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman at the helm and Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires co-writing the script. But although Pine is said to be the “lynchpin” to getting the project off the ground, he’s currently in the dark when it comes to the story.

“We haven’t seen a script,” added Pine. “I don’t know anything about it. […] I don’t trust anybody. But I’m excited. I love the story, I love Star Trek, I love my people.

Star Trek 4 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 22, 2023.
