Chris Hemsworth is Playing the Villain in George Miller’s Furiosa

George Miller’s Furiosa is fleshing out its cast with a host of big names that currently includes Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role and Chris Hemsworth. Given his penchant for big-screen heroics, many fans have assumed that Hemsworth would play an ally to Taylor-Joy’s character. But now it sounds like that isn’t the case at all.

The latest Furiosa reveal comes from producer P.J. Voeten, who teased Hemsworth role in author Kyle Buchanan’s new oral history, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, which hit bookstores last week. Most of the attention surrounding the book has been focused on the on-set clashes that reportedly took place between Fury Road stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. However, Voeten dropped a pretty significant piece info about Hemsworth’s character.

“George saw Chris initially as a courtesy and then fell in love with the idea,” said Voeten. “He’s going to play totally against type, the lead baddie. Unfortunately, we’ve got to find all of our other characters that aren’t around anymore: a new Immortan, a new Bullet Farmer, and a few others.”

Playing the villain could be considered a big departure for Hemsworth. Regardless, Bad Times at the El Royale (pictured above) featured Hemsworth as a violent cult leader. So watching him vie for power in a post-apocalyptic landscape doesn’t sound like a huge stretch of his abilities.

So far, the only other confirmed cast member for Furiosa is Tom Burke, who joined the film last fall to replace Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Miller is directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with his longtime producing partner, Doug Mitchell.

Furiosa will open in theaters on May 24, 2024.
