Zack Snyder Casts Rupert Friend and Stuart Martin in Rebel Moon

We can finally put a couple of faces to Rebel Moon’s intergalactic adversaries. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rupert Friend and Stuart Martin have booked villainous roles Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi epic for Netflix.

Friend has been cast as the film’s “lead antagonist,” which presumably means he’s playing Balisarius. Early loglines for Rebel Moon describe him as a tyrannical regent who brings his armies to the edge of the galaxy, where he sets his sights on a peaceful colony of humans. In an effort to combat his forces, one of the colony’s inhabitants (played by Sofia Boutella) travels to nearby worlds in search of allies. The report doesn’t specify who Martin is playing, but his character is a villain as well.

Last year, Friend appeared in The French Dispatch and he will next show up in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. He previously received an Emmy nod for his role on Showtime’s Homeland and also played the titular video game protagonist in Hitman: Agent 47 in 2015. Meanwhile, Martin has worked in Snyder’s orbit before. He recently had a role in Netflix’s Army of Thieves, a prequel to Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Martin is also lending his voice to Snyder’s upcoming Twilight of the Gods anime series.

Earlier this month, Rebel Moon also added Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Bae Doona, and Ray Fisher in key supporting roles. Other cast members include Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang. Snyder is directing the movie from a screenplay he wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. He is also producing the film with his wife, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller through their Stone Quarry banner. Grand Electric’s Eric Newman is producing as well.

Netflix still hasn’t announced a release date for Rebel Moon. However, production will reportedly begin in April and wrap in November.
