Following months of casting announcements, Universal has officially set a release date for its long-in-the-works Renfield movie. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the film will open in theaters on April 14, 2023.
The film presents a modern-day spin on the Dracula mythos that centers on the vampire’s titular familiar, played by Nicholas Hoult. After spending hundreds of years doing his master’s bidding, Renfield is ready to strike out on his own when he meets and falls in love with a traffic cop named Rebecca (Awkwafina). Unfortunately, ending his codependent relationship with Dracula proves more difficult than he expected.
Universal has been developing Renfield for at least two years. Originally conceived by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who described the tone of the film as an “extremely violent” comedy. His idea was later expanded into a full screenplay by Rick & Morty writer Ryan Ridley. Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) was hired to direct the movie in late 2019. But the film later changed hands to The LEGO Movie director Chris McKay last April. Kirkman is producing the movie through his Skybound Entertainment banner alongside David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst.

Renfield will notably feature Nicholas Cage delivering another (hopefully) over-the-top performance as Dracula. Other cast members include Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Earlier this week, James Moses Black booked a role in the film as well. Production will reportedly take place in New Orleans this year.
