Michael Sarnoski is Directing Paramount’s A Quiet Place Spinoff

Paramount is moving ahead with its plans to expand A Quiet Place’s universe. Last fall, development on a spinoff hit a snag when Jeff Nichols vacated his role as the film’s writer and director. But after a three month search, the studio appears to have locked in a replacement. Deadline brings word that Michael Sarnoski is in negotiations to helm the movie.

Sarnoski burst onto the indie scene last year with Pig, which starred Nicolas Cage and was a surprise hit. It received critical acclaim and earned a spot on several year-end lists. Before that, Sarnoski had only helmed a few TV episodes and shorts. Last month, Sarnoski’s work on Pig won him the National Board of Review Award for Best Directorial Debut. He has also received nominations at this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards and Gotham Awards ceremonies.

Nichols was attached to Paramount’s A Quiet Place spinoff for almost a year before departing the project back in October. A search for a new director began immediately. According to Deadline’s sources, John Krasinski (the director and star of the first two films) immediately put Sarnoski on the shortlist after Pig blew him away. The report describes Sarnoski’s vision for the movie as “different from what Krasinski had done with the first two.” Regardless, his pitch “fit the tone of the world they had created and felt he was the perfect fit for their next installment.”

Krasinski will produce the Quiet Place spinoff through his Sunday Night banner alongside Allyson Seeger. Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller are also producing the film through Platinum Dunes. Paramount hasn’t announced a release date.
