James Gunn Says Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Defies Fan Expectations

Only two days remain until Peacemaker arrives on HBO Max. But as James Gunn continues navigating the series’ promotional circuit, it’s only fitting that he has to field a few questions about his long-awaited return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , which will finally hit theaters next year. And Gunn gave fans a few more reasons to be excited during a recent interview with Collider.

While Will Poulter’s MCU debut in Vol. 3 as Adam Warlock is the biggest news from the sequel, Gunn is talking up Chukwudi Iwuji’s mystery role in the film. Iwuji worked with Gunn on Peacemaker’s first season. And apparently, Iwuji’s performance is turning heads at Marvel as well.

“It’s going great,” said Gunn. “Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I’m really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went… They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it’s not going to be the movie people… It’s different than what people are going to expect. It’s a hard road, but I’m really happy with it so far.”

This could mean any number of things. As with most of Gunn’s other work, the first two Guardians installments are known for being more light-hearted alternatives to the average Marvel movie. However, if Gunn says he’s taking the characters in new directions, could that mean a more dramatic sequel is on the way? Time will tell, but this isn’t the only new Guardians adventure on the horizon. Later this year, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will close out 2022 in festive style. But although the special is supposed to debut on Disney+ in 11 months’ time, Gunn admitted that they have yet to roll cameras on the heroes’ holiday caper.

“It’s still upcoming in the shoot,” continued Gunn. “We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there’s too much Omicron around, so we couldn’t do it. We’re going to have to fit it in. I haven’t started yet. I’m excited to. It’s fun. The holiday special is… I’m almost jealous of it, even though I wrote it because people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I’m almost like, ‘Well, wait. I’ve got this movie here I’ve been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time.’ But, it is really funny and really good.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
