Universal’s Renfield Movie Casts Awkwafina in a Mystery Role

Just one day after recruiting Nicolas Cage to play Count Dracula, Universal’s Renfield movie has added another big name to its cast. Deadline is reporting that Awkwafina will star opposite Cage and Nicholas Hoult in the upcoming film. However, the producers aren’t disclosing the nature of her role. Casts Awkwafina.

News of Awkwafina’s involvement comes on the heels of her leading role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Earlier this year, she also had a voice role in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon and starred in a second season of her Comedy Central series Awkwafina is Nora From Queens. Next up, she will appear alongside Mahershala Ali in Swan Song, which hits Apple TV+ later this month.

Renfield will put a unique spin on the Dracula legend by shifting the focus onto Hoult’s title character. In Bram Stoker’s original novel, R.M. Renfield was committed to an insane asylum because he was believed to be suffering from paranoid delusions. He was also obsessed with immortality and  frequently dined on insects and small animals to consume their life force. But it was later revealed that Dracula promised Renfield the chance to live forever in exchange for doing his bidding.
