Many fans consider Duncan Idaho to be their favorite Dune character on account of his unmatched fencing skills as well as his role in bridging the gap between House Atreides and Arrakis’ Fremen population. So when it came time to cast him in Denis Villeneuve’s highly-anticipated remake, an actor was needed who could embody both the warrior and peacekeeper sides of his persona. Jason Momoa won the part, and in a new featurette released by Warner Bros., viewers can get an inside look at his journey to bring the iconic swordmaster to life.
Momoa describes Duncan as a “legendary warrior” who is fiercely loyal to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. Throughout the video, Momoa practices his Dune stunts before cameras actually started rolling on the film. This wasn’t Momoa’s first brush with a sword fight. But according to him, the filmmakers worked to give Duncan his own fighting style that stood apart from some of Momoa’s other characters, including See’s Baba Voss.

By the time production finally started, Momoa had undergone weeks of intense training. But it looks like it all paid off in the end. Interestingly enough, one of Momoa’s big Dune fight scenes was filmed the day after Game of Thrones aired its finale on HBO. And when the time came to shoot, Momoa dedicated his performance to his former Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke.
Dune hits theaters and HBO Max on October 22.
