Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Talks The Matrix 4 Scope, Teases Aquaman 2 Role

The next few months will be crucial for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s career. After making a name for himself in the superhero space  following some convincing performances in Aquaman and Watchmen, Abdul-Mateen landed a role in the upcoming The Matrix 4. While the details about his forthcoming job are still undisclosed, it appears that the scope of the film directed by Lana Wachowski impacted the Black Mirror vet.

“I remember Keanu and his first line. I looked up, and there was Keanu, and I said, ‘Oh s***, I’m really in The Matrix,’ ” he said while talking with THR. “It was just Keanu in that voice. And the technology that Lana incorporated and the filmmaking, camera rigs that I’ve never seen before. It’s so ambitious. It was really interesting to be making The Matrix 4 at a time when the world was so warped and when reality was so distorted. It could creep in a little bit if you let it.”

Fans will have to wait for Dec. 22 to discover what the actor is referring to for The Matrix 4.

Abdul-Mateen will also return in the Aquaman sequel, resuming the role of David Kane, a.k.a. Black Manta. And it seems that he will play a more prominent role than in the first one.

“I think the script is better than it was in the first one,” he said. “It gives the actors a lot of good storytelling moments. In Aquaman, we just got a small introduction to Black Manta and to some of his motivations. In this one, I get to exercise and breathe a little bit more. I’m showing some different colors with this one.”

According to the producers’ plans, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on Dec. 16, 2022.
