Regina King Will Direct Legendary’s Bitter Root Adaptation

After making her feature directorial debut last year with One Night in Miami, Regina King is returning to the world of comic book adaptations for her next behind-the-camera effort. According to Deadline, the Watchmen actress has signed on to direct Bitter Root, based on the Image Comics series of the same name.

Legendary first announced its plans to bring Bitter Root to the big screen back in 2019. It was created by Chuck Brown, David F. Walker, and artist Sanford Greene. The comic book series follows the Sangeryes, a Black family of monster hunters living in New York in the 1920s. The family isn’t on the best of speaking terms when the series begins. Yet when new supernatural threats emerge, they have no choice but to reunite and resume their violent ways.

King’s work on One Night in Miami was widely praised and landed her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director. She previously won an Oscar in 2019 for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk. Last fall, King also won a Primetime Emmy for playing Angela Abar on HBO’s Watchmen.

Additionally, the studio has enlisted Bryan Edward Hill to rewrite the Bitter Root script. Hill is no stranger to comics, having tackled Detective Comics for DC and written several episodes of Titans. He was also recently tasked with rebooting the Power Rangers franchise for eOne and Hasbro. Hill confirmed his involvement with Bitter Root on Twitter. You can check out what he had to say below.

Legendary hasn’t set a release date for Bitter Root yet.
