Janina Gavankar Joins Borderlands as a New Character

Yet another mystery role in Eli Roth’s hotly-anticipated Borderlands movie has been filled. Deadline brings word that Janina Gavankar is the latest addition to Lionsgate’s adaptation of Gearbox Software’s hit video game series.

Gavankar will star in the movie as Commander Knoxx, a character not previously seen in any of the original games. We still don’t know much about her, but apparently she’s “key” to the film’s story. The same was also said of Haley Bennet when she joined Borderlands last month as an old acquaintance of Cate Blanchett’s Lilith. Roth’s Borderlands cast also includes Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Olivier Richters, Edgar Ramirez, and Jack Black.

Apple TV+ subscribers might recognize Gavankar from her recurring role on The Morning Show. She has also shown up in episodes of other series like True Blood and The League. On the big screen, Gavankar recently appeared opposite Ben Affleck in The Way Back. Next up, she’ll star in Invasion, a new sci-fi film hitting Amazon Prime later this year.

Borderlands primarily follows Blanchett’s Lilith as she scours the planet Pandora to find Atlas’ (Ramirez) daughter. To help her in her search, she teams up with a ragtag crew of explorers that includes Roland (Hart), Tannis (Curtis), Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), Krieg (Munteanu), and the robot Claptrap (Black).

Roth is directing Borderlands from a script by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. Production on the film began earlier this month. However, Lionsgate still hasn’t announced a release date.
