Haley Bennett Lands a Mystery Role in the Borderlands Movie

Director Eli Roth has already assembled a cast of big names for his big-screen take on Gearbox’s Borderlands series. Over the last few months, the likes of Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, and Jamie Lee Curtis have joined the film as recognizable characters from the original video games. But it sounds like there’s room in writer Craig Mazin’s script for some new characters as well. According to IGN, Roth has just cast Haley Bennett to play one of these roles.

Unlike every other Borderlands casting announcement, Roth didn’t provide specifics on the nature of Bennett’s character. But whoever she is, has a link to Blanchett’s Lilith, who’s been a staple of the game series ever since the first installment was released in 2009. Originally from the planet Dionysus, Lilith is a Siren-class character known for her tattoos, crimson red hair, and mysterious superpowers. Bennett is apparently playing someone who is “key to [Lilith’s] past,” but it’s not clear what their connection is.

Bennett recently appeared in two big 2020 releases: Hillbilly Elegy and The Devil All the Time, both of which premiered on Netflix. Some of her other film work includes The Girl on the Train, The Magnificent Seven, and Hardcore Henry. Next up, she’ll appear opposite Peter Dinklage in Joe Wright’s Cyrano.

Borderlands’ principal cast also includes Hart as Roland, Curtis as Patricia Tannis, Ariana Greeblatt as Tiny Tina, and Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap. Earlier this week, Florian Munteanu joined the cast as the Psycho known as Krieg. Lionsgate still hasn’t announced a release date for the film.
