Angel Manuel Soto Will Direct Warner Bros. & DC’s Blue Beetle Movie

Way back in 2018, word broke that Warner Bros. Pictures and DC were developing a Blue Beetle movie featuring the Jaime Reyes version of the character. After a long period of silence, the Blue Beetle movie has a director. Via The Wrap, Angel Manuel Soto has signed on to helm the first DC superhero movie with a Latino lead.

“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” said Soto in a statement. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”

Soto is the director of Charm City Kings, which won acclaim at the Sundance 2020 festival. He has also helmed El Pugil, La Granja, and the VR narratives Dinner Party and Bashir’s Dream.

Mexican filmmaker Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the script for Blue Beetle. His previous projects also include Miss Bala, and Universal’s remake of Scarface. According to The Wrap, Blue Beetle may begin filming this fall.

The original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett, was created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski. In 1966, Steve Ditko created Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle. Jaime Reyes is a far more recent creation. Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and artist Cully Hamner debuted Jaime in his own Blue Beetle comic in 2006. He’s been a part of the DC universe ever since.

Unlike his predecessors, Jaime is empowered by an alien scarab that is attached to his body. The scarab also creates a full body armor around Jamie, and allows him to fly.
