We already know that Thor: Love and Thunder is bringing back Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who will wield Mjolnir as The Mighty Thor. But according to Tessa Thompson, whose Valkyrie became Asgard’s new monarch at the end of Avengers: Endgame, this is only the tip of the iceberg. In a new interview with The Playlist, Thompson teased the jam-packed cast of characters that Taika Waititi is assembling for the upcoming sequel.
“Yeah, I can tease that [Valkyrie]’s definitely King of New Asgard when we find her,” said Thompson. “And as was the case in the last four, I would say that she’s a part of an adventure that involved Thor, in the sense that it’s called Thor: Love and Thunder. And I’d say there’s some cool stuff going on. We have some new characters; we have some folks potentially from other pockets of the MCU. And then we have some folks, maybe, that we’ve seen before.”
So far, the only “new character” confirmed for Love and Thunder is Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. It’s still fairly early to begin speculating on who else might be making their MCU debut in the film. However, Thompson has previously hinted that the sequel will find Valkyrie, the MCU’s first bisexual superhero, meeting her Queen. There’s a vocal contingent of fans who would love to see her rule Asgard with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Regardless, it will probably be someone new.

Last week, word broke that Jaimie Alexander was also returning to play Lady Sif for the first time since Thor: The Dark World opened in 2013. But when it comes to returning characters, there are a number of other possibilities as well. Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgård are certainly prime candidates to reprise their roles as Darcy Lewis and Erik Selvig from earlier films. We already know that Dennings is coming back to play Darcy in next month’s WandaVision on Disney+. However, she recently cast doubt on the chance of her character showing up in Love and Thunder, suggesting that the filmmakers would have reached out to her by now if she had a role in the sequel. Meanwhile, Skarsgård is reportedly still contracted to appear in one more MCU film, so he seems more likely.
Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
