Chris Pine Will Star in Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons Movie

With Wonder Woman 1984 on the verge of release, Chris Pine has just secured his next big fantasy film. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Pine has been cast in Paramount’s long-awaited Dungeons & Dragons reboot.

The report makes no mention of which character Pine is playing in the film. But given the vastness of D&D lore, the possibilities appear to be endless. The reboot has been in development for at least five years, initially set up at Warner Bros. before changing hands over to Paramount. Last year, Game Night helmers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley joined the reboot as directors. Paramount previously set a 2021 release date for the film. Goldstein and Daley even planned on traveling to the U.K. earlier this year to scout locations. Unfortunately, the coronavirus put a damper on those plans and forced the studio to delay the movie to 2022. Goldstein and Daley ended up using this extra time to fine-tune the script.

The upcoming reboot will mark the first-live action D&D movie to hit the big screen since New Line Cinema released its own Dungeons & Dragons film in 2000, which starred former Lois & Clark actor Justin Whalin alongside Marlon Wayans, Thora Birch, and Jeremy Irons. The movie was famously torn apart by critics and bombed at the box office. Regardless, it spawned one sequel that premiered on SYFY in 2005 and featured Bruce Payne reprising his role as Damodar. Another film was released straight to DVD in 2012.

Dungeons & Dragons will hit theaters on May 27, 2022.
