Indiana Jones 5 Producer Says James Mangold is Rewriting the Script

It’s been almost a whole year since James Mangold was chosen to shepherd the next Indiana Jones sequel, and there hasn’t been a lot of new information on the movie since then. Considering the 19-year gap between The Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a long wait is probably nothing fans can’t handle (especially given the lukewarm response to the latter film). Regardless, we’re all curious to see how the next entry will turn out under Disney’s leadership. Now, producer Frank Marshall, who’s been with the franchise since the beginning, has offered an update on Indy’s new adventure.

Marshall recently discussed the status of Indiana Jones 5 with Den of Geek. Apparently, Mangold is currently toiling away on a new draft of the script, and Marshall sounds confident in his abilities. The producer also confirmed that despite rumors to the contrary, Harrison Ford is coming back to headline the sequel.

“Yeah, we are working on the script,” said Marshall. “There will only be one Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford. What I’m excited about with Jim is a great story. I think you see that in his movies like Ford v Ferrari. It’s all about characters and telling a good story. So I’m excited to see what he comes up with. I haven’t seen [the script] yet so I don’t know what to tell you.”

The fifth film has gone through a somewhat rocky development process ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, who previously distributed the last four Indiana Jones movies through Paramount. In 2016, the studio set a 2019 release date for the sequel, with Steven Spielberg directing and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull writer David Koepp crafting the story. Obviously, the film ended up getting pushed back, and the studio later recruited Jonathan Kasdan and Dan Fogelman to write their own drafts of the script. Spielberg vacated the director’s chair at the beginning of this year. However, he’s remaining with the film as a producer.

Disney is currently planning to release Indiana Jones 5 on July 29, 2022.
