The New Mutants Latest Featurettes Introduce Wolfsbane, Mirage, and Sunspot

After years of delays, The New Mutants is finally opening this Friday, but the film’s box office success isn’t exactly guaranteed. The pandemic is ongoing, so a crowded theater might be the last place anyone wants to be right now. But beyond this, the movie also features a cast of characters that casual Marvel fans may not be familiar with. Fortunately, director Josh Boone recruited a talented group of actors to bring these gifted youngsters to life. To help introduce them, 20th Century Studios has released three new featurettes, each focusing on a key mutant from the film.

The videos spotlight Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Dani Moonstar/Mirage (Blu Hunt), and Roberto da Costa/Sunspot (Henry Zaga). The performers also show up to offer primers on their characters’ respective backstories. Williams explains how Rahne’s religious background clashes with her mutant ability to change into a wolf. Regardless, she says she “feels more confident” when she’s in her wolf form.

Similarly, Dani is dealing with her own trauma after losing her family. She’s able to make friends with most of the other occupants in Dr. Reyes’ facility, especially Rahne. However, the new footage teases her conflict with Anya Taylor-Joy’s Illyana Rasputin. She also struggles with inner demons relating to the volatility of her mutant powers. But as Zaga says, the characters will have to face their fears “head-on” to become better.

The New Mutants opens this Friday, August 28.
