Nearly 40 years after his primetime debut, KITT is zooming back into the cultural consciousness. But this time, he’ll show up on the big screen. Deadline is reporting that Spyglass Media Group is working with James Wan to develop a Knight Rider feature film.
The original Knight Rider TV series premiered in 1982 and starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a former LAPD detective who receives facial reconstructive surgery after an accident. Michael becomes a crimefighter with help from an artificially-intelligent Firebird Trans Am: the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), as voiced by William Daniels. The series aired for four seasons on NBC before concluding in 1986. Over the next several years, various made-for-TV movies and spinoffs were produced. And in 2008, NBC tried rebooting the series with Justin Bruening playing Knight’s son and Val Kilmer voicing KITT. That show only lasted for one season.

Spyglass has enlisted screenwriter T.J. Fixman to pen this latest version of Knight Rider. Fixman is known for his work in the video game industry. He’s written several entries in the Ratchet & Clank series and also co-wrote the 2016 animated film starring those characters. Additionally, Fixman has lent his storytelling talents to Resistance 2 and Overstrike.
According to Deadline’s report, the studio is developing the movie as a “present-day take” on the Knight Rider brand. This likely rules out an appearance by Hasselhoff as Michael Knight. Additionally, the film “will maintain the anti-establishment tone of the original.”
Knight Rider is still without a release date.
