James Cameron clearly loves the ocean. Additionally, he’s become an expert in deep-sea exploration over the course of his filmmaking career. He has also helped pioneer a number of underwater filming techniques. So when Cameron first shared that his upcoming Avatar sequels would explore Pandora’s aquatic environments, fans expected nothing less than mesmerizing shots of the planet’s marine life. Now, we know how some of the films’ characters will be getting around down there.
The official Avatar Twitter account has shared two conceptual renderings of the Crabsuit submersible vehicle that will appear in the sequels. You can view the new images for yourself below.

As the caption says, the Crabsuit comes courtesy of the Resources Development Administration. The original Avatar also introduced the RDA as the non-government organization responsible for mining Pandora’s resources. They also employed their armed SecOps division to combat any threats on the planet’s surface, giving them a fleet of top-of-the-line military vehicles. That includes the AMP suit and the Scorpion gunship to make their jobs easier.
Furthermore, given the RDA’s hawkish nature, it’s likely that the Crabsuit is packing a few weapons onboard as well. Additionally, we suspect that Cameron’s experience with submarines may have played a pivotal role in its design.
Avatar 2 will open in theaters on December 16, 2022.
