What The Old Guard Star Charlize Theron Learned From the Comics

Few stars in Hollywood manage to be both a sex symbol and a credible action movie star. But thanks to some recent role in action-packed movies, Charlize Theron is proving that she feels comfortable in this role. In just a little more than a month, fans will see her in the adaptation of The Old Guard. While speaking with Empire, the actress revealed that she read the original comic miniseries and felt a sort of connection with the immortal protagonist.

“My initial reaction when I read the Old Guard…was that I felt there was something very grounded in Andy,” she said. “That was the thing that excited me: despite the concept, she felt real, and not ‘fantasy’. So, I tried to bring a genuine exhaustion to her, and not get bogged down in the idea that she’s lived thousands of years, she’s seen it all, and she knows every kind of martial art there is.”

Charlize Theron will portray the well-skilled mercenary Andy, who lived 6000 years of Earthly history. As the leader of an immortal warrior team, she is also teaching the recruits the price of eternal life.

The actress went on to add that she worked with the original fight team from the first John Wick, praising their work as “the best in the industry.” The actress established herself as a viable action star thanks to headlining appearances in movies like Mad Max: Fury RoadAtomic Blonde, and The Fate of the Furious.

Gina Prince-Bythewood is helming the direction of the movie with a script by comic book creator Greg Rucka. The latter and artist Leandro Fernandez began publishing The Old Guard in 2017.

The movie will be available for streaming on Netflix starting July 10.
