Last year, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left many fans scratching their heads. One of the most significant reveals outed Rey as the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine himself. While the movie may have answered the question of Rey’s lineage, it never quite touched on how exactly Palpatine fathered a child. However, Rae Carson’s new novelization, The Rise of Skywaker: Expanded Edition, does have an answer for that question.
According to Screenrant, Carson’s book further explores Rey’s parentage. It also reveals that the evil Emperor didn’t conceive a child with a woman. During the climactic confrontation on Exogel, Rey has visions of Palpatine’s past. It is revealed that after the Emperor’s body was destroyed in Return of the Jedi, he “thrust his consciousness into a clone body.” However, the transfer was deemed imperfect and Sith Eternal were tasked with finding a better vessel. In a failed attempt to do so, they created a clone described as a “useless, powerless failure.”

This flawed clone of Palpatine developed his own identity and fell in love with a woman. They built a life together and eventually conceived Rey. Additionally, they managed to conceal Rey’s survival before they were murdered on Palpatine’s orders.
The Rise of Skywalker: Expanded Edition will arrive in bookstores on March 17.
