Kumail Nanjiani Explains How Eternals is Different From Other Marvel Movies

A few comic book fans probably did a double-take last year after Kumail Nanjiani joined the cast of Marvel’s Eternals. Nanjiani, of course, is primarily known for his comedic roles on TV shows like Silicon Valley and in films like The Big Sick. So hearing that he would play a superhero definitely came as a surprise. Nanjiani has clearly committed to his role as Kingo, having bulked up quite a bit for his MCU debut. Regardless, he insists that the upcoming film does more than just showcase impressive action sequences.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Nanjiani promised that Eternals packs the usual spectacle that moviegoers have come to expect. However, he also revealed that he was impressed by the filmmakers’ approach to the source material.

“My super-suit is very, very comfortable actually, even though it’s very elaborate,” said Nanjiani. “But the other thing is, making this massive movie in many important ways still feels like you’re making an independent movie, in the sense that it really feels like a family and it feels like it’s really about characters and relationships and very small moments. So while you have certain scenes where you’re hanging up on a wire fighting bad guys and you have all these superpowers, the rest of it does feel like you’re making something really small.”

Expectations for Eternals (and the rest of Marvel’s Phase Four) are certainly high, especially after Avengers: Endgame set a new bar for the MCU. But according to Nanjiani, the film could be the most monumental entry in the franchise yet.

“It’s really, really an epic,” Nanjiani says. “And it’s really such a science-fiction story. It’s a superhero story, but in some ways, it’s the most sci-fi of all the Marvel movies and it’s the most epic of all the Marvel movies. And the story spans thousands of years. So it’s really not like any of the other Marvel movies.”

Eternals opens in theaters on November 6.
