Going into this year’s Oscar nominations, Joker was expected to be a serious contender for the top Academy Awards. It lived up to those expectations when Joker walked away with 11 nominations at the Academy Award announcements. That includes a Best Picture nomination for Joker alongside Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite.
Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as Joker landed him a nomination for Best Actor. That also makes Phoenix the second performer to be nominated for playing the Joker after the late Heath Ledger. In 2009, Ledger posthumously won a Best Supporting Actor award for his role in The Dark Knight. In the Best Director category, Todd Phillips earned a nomination as well. Phillips also shared the nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay with Joker co-writer Scott Silver.

Joker was also honored with nominations for Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Original Score, Makeup and Hair, and Costume Design. Among comic book films, Avengers: Endgame was the only other film in that genre to get a nomination. It will compete for the Visual Effects category. However, legendary composer John Williams earned his record 52nd Oscar nomination for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘s score.
