Star Wars’ Adam Driver Explains Kylo Ren’s Helmet in The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is upon us, as the movie is going to officially open in theaters tomorrow. Some details of the upcoming movie, though, are already common knowledge. An example, among the many, Kylo Ren‘s new helmet. Speaking with Entertainment WeeklyStar Wars‘ Adam Driver revealed why his character is wearing the same (but repaired) helmet he broke in The Last Jedi.

“It’s another good example of [writers J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] kind of leading what’s going on externally with the character with what is going on internally,” Driver said. “That’s not a new detail — it’s been happening since The Force Awakens for that character.”

The actor explained that his character probably is still “uncomfortable in his own skin,” even though he underwent “a rebirth over the second movie.”

Driver then went on explaining that the helmet is just a symbol of Kylo Ren’s growth over the new trilogy.

“It’s a coming together, he’s cherry-picked things he’s looked at through his history and that he’s decided he wants to claim for who he is,” he stated. “So it’s a physical representation of how that character has grown.”

In spite of the actor’s words, someone may argue that the decision to let Kylo Ren wear his helmet again may be due to J.J. Abrams’ desire to retcon some of the choices of Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi.
