J.J. Abrams Hints at LGBTQ Representation in The Rise of Skywalker

Sorry guys, but if you were among those who hoped Finn and Poe would end up together in The Rise of Skywalker, there is bad news for you. The special chemistry among these two characters didn’t go unnoticed, and many fans shipped the FinnPoe couple. Speaking with Variety, however, Star Wars‘ Oscar Isaac announced that ship is never going to sail.

“Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control,” Isaac said. “It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.”

Short after, also his fellow actor John Boyega confirmed that “they are just platonic at the moment.”

The LGBTQ community should not despair, though. In the same interview, director J.J. Abrams hinted that there might be an LGBTQ representation in The Rise of Skywalker.

“In the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams stated. “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I just said.”

Even though Abrams didn’t reveal any detail about this “representation,” our guess is that maybe some of the new characters could lead the charge of bringing forth the LGBTQ banner.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20. Are you among those who shipped Finn and Poe? Would you have liked them ending up together? Let us know in the comments section below.
