MCU fans spent the last month in a state of despair after it was announced that Sony pulled the plug on its deal with Marvel that allowed the studios to share Spider-Man. Fortunately, a resolution was reached last week. A third Marvel Studios-produced Spidey flick is coming in 2021, and it sounds like we have Tom Holland to thank for it.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, any chance of continuing Peter Parker’s MCU adventures was “100 percent dead” until Holland intervened. Holland reached out to Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony chairman Tom Rothman and appealed to directly to them. To do this, he reportedly “showed them the outpouring of fan support” that emerged following the studios’ breakup. THR suggests that Holland’s role in Sony’s upcoming Uncharted film also helped him get through to Rothman.

This is somewhat surprising, since Holland put on a brave face after the split was made public. Rather than express his own disappointment, he insisted during an interview with GQ that the wallcrawler was in “safe hands” with Sony at the controls. But now it seems like he was only doing this to assuage fans’ doubts while he worked his magic behind the scenes.
In the end, Disney stands to profit more from the next Spider-Man movie than from previous installments. The studio will earn 25% of the net box office gross while also contributing 25% of the film’s budget. The next Spider-Man movie will open on July 16, 2021.
