James Gunn Confirms The Suicide Squad’s Cast

Following months of scattershot casting announcements and rumors, James Gunn has formally unveiled who he’ll be directing in The Suicide Squad. Gunn took to Twitter earlier today to share a list of 24 cast members along with what looks like our first glimpse at the film’s logo. You can check out his announcement below.

Many of the cast members aren’t surprising. We already knew that Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis would be returning from David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad in 2016. However, Gunn’s tweet finally confirms that Margot Robbie will indeed be reprising her role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming sequel/reboot. It remains to be seen what kind of role she’ll play in the film after her character’s “emancipation” in next year’s Birds of Prey.

David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, and Steve Agee previously joined the film as Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher, and King Shark, respectively. We also once again see Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, and Taika Waititi. Unfortunately, Gunn didn’t provide any new info about which characters these actors are playing.

However, there are a handful of new names here as well. It looks like Gunn has recruited his brother, Sean Gunn, for a role. Other new additions include Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Juan Diego Botto, Alice Braga, Tinashe Kajese, Julio Ruiz, and Gunn’s girlfriend Jennifer Holland. Michael Rooker was also previously rumored to be portraying King Shark. But now it’s unclear whom he will play in the movie.

The Suicide Squad arrives in theaters on August 6, 2021.
