New Republic Pictures Options Image Comics’ Undiscovered Country

With a timely premise and an all-star creative team like Scott Snyder and Charles Soule at the helm, Undiscovered Country is poised to be a big hit for Image Comics when it launches in November. So it makes sense that Hollywood is already jumping at the chance to turn it into a movie. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that New Republic Pictures has scooped up the film rights to the upcoming series.

Snyder and Soule announced Undiscovered Country at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con. They’re collaborating on the series with artists Giuseppe Camuncoli and Daniele Orlandini. The book imagines a future where the United States seals itself off from the world at large. When a global pandemic threatens humanity three decades later, a team of explorers passes through its borders in a desperate bid for a cure. Unfortunately, what they find poses challenges to their own survival.

In addition to their work on the comic, Snyder and Soule will co-write the film adaptation’s screenplay. They will also serve as executive producers on the movie with Camuncoli. John Hilary Shepherd is overseeing the project for New Republic.

Both Snyder (Batman, American Vampire) and Soule (Daredevil, Star Wars: Darth Vader) come with impressive pedigrees, so Undiscovered Country is highly anticipated. The writers previously discussed the series’ real-world parallels during an interview with THR last month.

“The thing for us that was so exciting about it was that it’s based on, you know, real thinking right now — except it’s taken to kind of comic-book lunacy,” said Snyder. “We want it to be a book that feels like Land of the Lost meets Lewis and Clark, where you read every issue and it’s just terrestrial fish monsters and mammoths, robots and techno zombies. It doesn’t feel political. Deep down, it’s personal; it’s about the dangers of isolationism, both on a personal level and on a global level.”

Undiscovered Country #1 arrives in comic book stores on November 6. Are you more excited to read the series now that it’s getting a film adaptation? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
