David Harbour Doubts a Hellboy Sequel Will Happen

Lionsgate rebooted Hellboy earlier this year with David Harbour in the title role. Unfortunately, it tanked at the box office and made less than $50 million worldwide. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Harbour expressed doubt that Hellboy will make his return anytime soon.

“I don’t think it made a lot of money,” explained Harbour. “I don’t really keep up with those things too much to be honest, but I don’t think the perception was that it was a hit, and so in that way, I don’t know that the risk is worth it.”

Hellboy will hit home video next month, where it could potentially catch on with die hard fans. However, Harbour doesn’t believe that’s enough to spark interest in a sequel.

“I think the idea is to move on,” continued Harbour. “The producers spoke to me just saying, ‘Great job,’ they really liked what I did, but I haven’t heard anything about a sequel, and I’m not hanging my hat on anything like that.”

Hellboy didn’t win much favor with critics. It currently sits at 17 percent over at Rotten Tomatoes. However, Harbour did note that it has its fair share of fans.

“There’s a lot of people who reach out to me who really loved it and really enjoyed the new take, and were just happy to see him back on the screen,” said Harbour. “But I know in the culture at large, I don’t think it was very well received.”

Harbour will be back as Jim Hopper in the third season of Stranger Things, which premieres on Netflix on July 4. He also co-stars in the upcoming Black Widow film.
