First Spider-Man: Far From Home Reviews Swing High

Due out in a few days, reviews for Spider-Man: Far From Home have begun appearing online. So far, they’ve been very positive towards a fun and breezy closure to Marvel’s Phase 3. Not only that, but surprises during the mid and post-credits suggest big things to come for the hero. (Don’t worry, there are no spoilers here.)

In his review, ComingSoon’s Scott Chitwood considers Far From Home film to be a triumph. He did note that it had some plot similarities with “another superhero film,” but didn’t say which one. Overall, though, it’s “a lot of fun and may actually be my favorite movie of 2019 so far. It’s well worth seeing on the big screen over the holiday weekend,” particularly “as part of a double feature with the re-release of Avengers: Endgame.”

IGN’s Jim Vejvoda was equally positive with his review, giving Spider-Man: Far From Home an 8.8 out of 10. He added that Jake Gyllenhaal was “suitably dashing” in his role as Quentin Beck/Mysterio. He said the film is a “grandly entertaining culmination of the MCU wall-crawler’s journey so far,” mainly due to its “sweet humor, clever commentary, and deft action sequences.” And it also “sets the table for some exciting new adventures ahead for Spider-Man and his place in the MCU.”

Comic Book Resources considers Spider-Man: Far From Home to be a perfect Avengers: Endgame epilogue. Reviewer Josh Bell states, “As was the case in Homecoming, the entertaining teen comedy is as much the draw here as the action, and the filmmakers succeed with both aspects.” He also notes “it works as a warm and funny high-school dramedy, an exciting action-adventure, and an old-fashioned superhero/supervillain battle. Who needs to save the universe when you can accomplish all that?”

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman believes the entire film is a “fake-out,” but says that in a very positive light in his review.“There’s a good twist, and it’s totally central (I won’t reveal it), but what’s resonant about it is that it enables Far From Home to play around with the very issue of what matters in a superhero movie.”

USA Today’s Brian Truitt says the film is just the vacation Marvel fans need after the “exhausting marathon” of Avengers: Endgame. “With quirky references…and plenty of big-time Avengers-style fights…the new Spider-Man definitely feels to fans like coming ‘home.’”

The L.A. Times’ Justin Chang noted that the film does soar quite often, though it stumbles a little bit as well. But that shouldn’t throw fans off. “The amusingly low stakes and the abundance of teen melodramatics are part of the movie’s stealthy charm.” Later in the review, he continues, “It doesn’t have quite the freshness and buoyance of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, a redundant but successful franchise reboot whose director, Jon Watts, returns for duty here. Nor can it hope to match the sheer ingenuity and artistry of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” although he did admire its “dazzle and speed.” He also gave a thumbs up to its “simpler, humbler aspirations,” and how it “fulfills them well enough.”

However, not all the reviews were glowing. Vox’s Alex Abad-Santos notes that the film works more as a romantic comedy than it does as the emotional drama it’s supposed to be. In his review, he says, “When the movie is at its best, it is so effortlessly engaging. It’s such a shame, then, that so much of the movie feels like (home) work.”

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich was even less positive in his review, noting that the movie is the “least essential” in the Marvel timeline. Giving it a C rating, he says, “Spider-Man: Far From Home is a cute but unadventurous bit of superhero housekeeping that only exists to clean up the cataclysmic mess that Avengers: Endgame left behind.”

For the most part, the film leans towards the plus side. The film currently sits at a 71 percent over on MetaCritic. And though reviews have yet to post over there, Rotten Tomatoes notes an early score of around 88 percent. That should put many fans at ease when they go see the film.
