Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Hasn’t Been a Priority For Marvel Studios

Last summer, Disney and Marvel fired James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over Gunn’s offensive tweets from a decade earlier. Since then, there’s been very little movement on the project beyond Feige’s admission that Gunn’s script will still be used. While speaking with Collider during Captain Marvel‘s press day, Feige suggested that the third Guardians simply isn’t a priority yet. Instead, Marvel has been concentrating on “other projects.”

“I mean, when it was pushed back, it was pushed back,” said Feige. “Meaning the release date, because it’s not coming out—although we’ve never announced a release date actually, but it was gonna happen sooner rather than later, initially of course. Outside of knowing that we’re gonna use [James Gunn’s] draft, [we have] been focusing on other projects.”

It’s somewhat disingenuous for Feige to say “we’ve never announced a release date,” since the third Guardians movie was widely believed to be coming in May 2020.  Gunn was getting ready for production when he was removed from the film. Until that happened, the film was still on track.

Although Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was heavily rumored to be Marvel’s choice to replace Gunn, he indicated that he never had any discussions about it. Furthermore, Waititi said “for me, that’s James’ film. Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad.’”

As for Gunn, he’s currently lined up to write and probably direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Brothers. That movie won’t come up until 2021, but it’s likely to beat the Guardians back to the big screen.
