Sony probably didn’t make Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with an eye taking home Oscar gold. But that’s exactly what happened at the Academy Awards. Even though it was up against heavyweights like Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet, Into the Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature Film.
The award was accepted by the film’s three directors, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, as well as executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The Hollywood Reporter shared a brief moment from their acceptance speech on Twitter.

While Into the Spider-Verse features a variety of heroes from across the multiverse, it primarily focuses on Miles Morales. As envisioned by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Miles is a half-black, half Puerto Rican teenager who became the new Spider-Man following the death of Peter Parker. The film loosely adapted Miles’ origin story, while allowing an alternate world Peter Parker to share Miles’ first adventure.
Into the Spider-Verse was critically acclaimed, and a box office success. To date, the film has made $185 million domestically. Sequels and spinoff movies are reportedly in the works. However, Sony has yet to release specific details. But in the wake of the film’s Oscar moment. the sequel will probably find a home on the schedule soon.
