When Captain Marvel hits theaters in two weeks, it will finally introduce the Skrulls to the MCU. Since the alien shapeshifters are such a crucial fixture of Marvel’s comic book universe, fan expectations are understandably high. However, casual comic book movie fans might not understand the gravity of their introduction. Not everyone knows about the Skrulls’ ancient war against the Kree even as it unfolds in front of them. But thankfully, Entertainment Weekly has posted a new Captain Marvel featurette that includes several cast and crew members providing the CliffsNotes on the factions’ long-standing dispute.
“We see the Kree on one side of a war that they’ve been engaged in for generations,” explained executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. “And there’s this force of Kree soldiers that Carol’s a part of called the Star Force.”
“They’re incredible warriors, the best at what they do,” added Brie Larson.

Additionally, the featurette shares new footage of the Skrulls’ transformations. Talos actor Ben Mendelsohn eloquently described their changes as “a chameleon ability, but, you know, amped up.”
According to the film’s co-director, Anna Boden, the aliens’ shapeshifting abilities will add more tension to the story. “Carol knows the Skrulls have infiltrated Earth and it kind of creates this sense of paranoia,” said Boden. “The Skrulls are after something and part of the mystery of the movie is Carol trying to figure out what they’re after and getting it before they do.”
