New Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer Teases Familiar Enemy
Earlier today we got our final look at the new Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer, and it did not disappoint.
The almost two and a half minute trailer promises action, surprises, wondrous visual effects, a strong Dumbledore/Newt bond, and a terrifyingly motivated villain in Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald. Even beyond that, the trailer drops a few subtle surprises including a deeper connection to the Harry Potter universe with an unexpected reveal.
At around 30 seconds in, Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) is seen whispering “Nagini” before the shot cuts to actress Claudia Kim morphing into the snake that eventually becomes Voldemort’s loyal pet. Nagini is one of the 7 horcruxes that He Who Must Not Be Named has hidden a piece of his soul into. She is famously killed by a brave Neville Longbottom in the final act of the Harry Potter series.

In this film, we will be getting Nagini’s origin story. She, along with Credence, are members of a traveling circus that uses magic as a sideshow event. Kim was able to break her silence about her character thanks to this new trailer and shared some more details in an interview with EW.
“It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini,” she said. “You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”
Kim also mentioned that Nagini is able to transform into a snake at will into the snake, but over time, she begins to lose control. She fears that one day she will not be able to return to human form. Along with the reveal of Nagini, we see a few other Potter icons including plenty more shots of Hogwarts, Dumbledore looking into the Mirror of Erised, and plenty more references throughout. The second of five planned films, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will hit theaters on November 16.
