DCU Timeline: When Is Creature Commandos Set?

James Gunn recently clarified the timeline of Creature Commandos with regard to Superman and Peacemaker. But is the animated series directly connected to his previous DC projects? Are the show and its characters also a part of the new DCU timeline and when exactly does Creature Commandos occur in it? Here’s all you need to know.

When does Creature Commandos take place in the DCU?

Creature Commandos is set two years after the events of The Suicide Squad. In the first episode of James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. mentions that his son died two years ago. The exact date of his death is listed as August 17, 2021. So, Creature Commandos likely takes place sometime in late 2023 or very early 2024.

Is The Suicide Squad canon to the DCU?

Only parts of past James Gunn projects such as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are canon to the DCU. In the past when James Gunn was asked about what’s canon to the DCU from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, he responded, “whatever we mention in anything” in future projects.

In his interview, with Collider, he further explained:

“Listen, Peacemaker is pretty easy. Peacemaker Season 1 is basically canon outside of the appearance of the Justice League at the end, which you’ll see something about that in Peacemaker Season 2. Suicide Squad is probably a little bit looser.”

Gunn clarified:

“We know that Rick Flag Sr. is angry because his son was killed by Peacemaker, so we know that situation happened in the past, we have something to refer to to think of what it might be like that that happened, but that exists as canon because it was mentioned in Creature Commandos, not necessarily because it existed in Suicide Squad. I think of Suicide Squad and Peacemaker as pretty unreliable memories of what happened in the DCU.”

Adding to his statement, Creature Commandos Episode 1 confirms many events from The Suicide Squad to be canon. Besides Rick Flag Jr.’s demise, Amanda Waller also confirmed that Project Starfish happened in the DCU timeline, and Weasel managed to come out of that alive, just as it was shown at the end of The Suicide Squad.

It’ll be interesting to see which other parts of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker will be revealed as canon in upcoming projects such as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2.
