Open the (Toy) 2001 Pod Bay Door for $1500, HAL

Toys based on Stanley Kubrick’s seminal sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey aren’t exactly common, for a number of reasons. Most notably, even though actors Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood miraculously still remain with us, they’re not interested in signing off on likeness rights.

I’m Sorry, Dave…

That’s no deterrent for Executive Replicas, who seem determined to make everything but actual figures, and damn the cost. They’ve previously made the Monolith, and official astronaut outfits for 1/6 scale figures, in case you happen to own generics that might fit inside.

All of which was apparently mere warmup for the piece de resistance– the pod, or as it’s officially known, the EVA Space Pod. Scaled to 1/6 figures, so your favorite Hot Toys or Sideshow character can get inside if you so choose, this collectible is painstakingly based on the on-screen model.

Per the company, the pod includes:

-Illuminated instrument panels and computer screens

-Detailed cockpit interior

-Accommodates 1/6 scale astronaut in cockpit

-Illuminated HAL 9000 ‘red eye’ forward camera

-Working forward spotlights

-Magnetic removable rear hatch

-Moveable and fully articulated tactile arms and claws

If you want the spacesuit to go with it, however, good luck with that. Originally sold for $350, the spacesuits now fetch around $600 on eBay. Then again, if you have the money to buy the pod, which costs $1,499.99, money may be no issue. Even the nonrefundable $180 down payment has an installment plan!

Maybe they’ll be persuaded to rerelease the suit if enough of these sell. Don’t expect anything crazy like a full-scale Discovery, though. It would have to be longer than the average house.

Take a look at the images below to see the crazy amounts of detail put into this thing. And be glad we’re not far enough along with AI for an actual HAL to be included. That computer ain’t right…
