Build the Monitor With McFarlane Store Exclusive DC Wave

McFarlane Toys‘ DC Multiverse action figures have impressively held the line at $20 per figure, even in a marketplace where every competing item runs anywhere from $25 to $40. When they’ve done build-a-figure waves, typically, the price goes up to $25, spreading the costs of the extra figure throughout the four-figure wave. If you want the Monitor, however, you may be in for some sticker shock. McFarlane’s latest DC build-a-figure wave, exclusive to their online store, ups the price per figure to $39.99.

Monitored Raise

Fans can save a little bit with the four-figure package deal while supplies last, which effectively bumps each figure down to $35 each. That’s still quite the markup, even if it does bring the figures more in line with the competition’s pricing. For the most part, they don’t come with any unusual extras besides the Monitor pieces, just the usual trading card and figure stand.

The one who does pack some extra value is Earth-2 Superman, who doesn’t just come with extra hands. For the first time in the McFarlane license, he wears a cloth cape with bendable wires for posing. Considering two of the other figures in the wave have plastic, dynamic forced-pose capes, there’s a significant difference.

Spectre sold out almost immediately, except for in the bundles, but if we know McFarlane, they’ll reuse this sculpt again, probably for a glow-in-the-dark version. Making up the rest of the wave are Kid Flash and Psycho-Pirate.

Who’s that last one? Helpfully, the company has provided a bio: “Roger Hayden was one of the Twenty humans Brainiac bestowed psionic powers on. Hayden believed his Medusa Mask allowed him to control the virus. He escaped the H.I.V.E. Queen, who was draining the energies of the Twenty, and found Superman. Hayden informed him Brainiac would use the Twenty as hosts for the minds of people from his destroyed home planet. Hayden tried to drain Superman’s energy to free the Twenty, but Lois Lane defeated him.”

Take a look at him and the rest of the wave in the images below. Here’s hoping the price hike simply reflects their exclusive nature and not an across-the board doubling.
