Note From the Editor: And we’re back. For our return column, Superhero Hype is welcoming another special guest cosplay correspondent: Florencia Sofen, a cosplayer who lives in Spain. She’s a very prolific costume maker, and a talented photographer as well. For her first SHH column, Florencia is sharing her take on Marvel’s Domino from X-Force and other X-Men-related titles. And as you can see, the influence for this costume came from the comics rather than Deadpool 2 .
I started reading New Mutants , and those teens grew up very fast. Domino was in the X-Force comics I read [after New Mutants ], and she was teaching them that there were other “radical” ways to be heroes…and I loved it.
It was a whole experience by itself, and I don’t regret anything 😉

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Domino
Superhero Hype Cosplay: Domino #1
This Domino cosplay was a challenge. We didn't have any concept to work with other than fan designs and the comics.

My prop weapons are painted Nerfs. Black gloss base with a silver dry brush, and it's ready for the battle!

The most delicate part of this costume was the make-up. I wanted something realistic, but keeping the comic look. Not a very spiky hair look. but something comfy for an action girl like Dom.
Short hair matches her perfectly, and I tried a soft blue base for the skin with a very dense white make- up to look more pallid.

It takes around 25 min to get the whole look. It depends on if I have to paint more on the neck or not, but other costumes with a similar make-up base like Harley Quinn gave me a lot of speed to apply on this one!

I don't know how to pattern properly. Most of the time, I buy patterns of my sizes or I adapt it on my way.
But when I must pattern by myself or make some costumes, the best way I have is getting my old clothes with similar fabrics. If it's elastic, we get some elastic clothes to make it, wear it, and paint all of the pieces.

Then cut by the seams and all the pieces, scale them with some extra centimeters for the new seams and see how it looks.
It's not the best way, but it's my way 😉

For this kind of superhero-cinematographic-look costume, I prefer false leather or some kind of vinyl. I also like mixing fabrics to get more volume with the textures.
Most of it is vinyl with foam, to give some form and extra volume for protections, and little parts of polyester from an old school bag. Yep, we also bet on recycling everything.
The belts and most of the stripes are from that school bag too! But not the X, which is made with false leather to have full movement on the upper part of the body, and so I don't get stabbed with a metal or plastic buckle.

It was hard, because none of the fabrics were elastic. Everything must be fitted, and it must be seam by seam. That's the main problem of costumes: they are like puzzles. But finally, It works.
My favorite stories about Domino are her latest comic series, written by Gail Simone, and her time on X-Force with Wolverine, Wolfsbane, X-23, and Warpath.
Both of those comics are very different, but that's the way she is. She's funny, and dangerous. But at least she's free to make the things she wants. And everything tends to go well, thanks to her fantastic luck.
Superhero Hype Cosplay: Domino #9
One of the best experiences in my life during a convention was meeting Gail Simone. It was at a comic con in my city, and Gail has been my favorite comic writer, by far, for many years.
Gail was a guest because of her work on DC Comics, but she had started working recently on Domino with David Baldeon.
I was a guest at that convention, and I was absolutely crazy about choosing cosplays and stuff. But I needed a picture with Gail. Maybe as Batgirl? Or as Black Canary? HELL NO! She was writing Domino , and Domino deserves a shot with her.
And... I was in the DC Comics line, waiting with all my comics to get signed and my props, dressed as Domino, and trying not to cry.

AND IT WAS WORTH IT. I got an incredible shot with Gail, and she also published that pic in Domino #1. It was like a dream!
But well, we didn't have Baldeon's design at that time when making the cosplay. We had X-Force and some more comics. But comics are all we need.
Well, comics and some imagination, with a little bit of explosives and a lot of energy to make some chaos at home!
