Superhero Hype’s Best Amazon Movie and DVD Deals for Jan 13

Movie theaters may be opening again, but not everyone’s ready to go back. And if the kids are stuck at home, purchases, rather than rentals, start to look better and better for the inevitable repeat viewings. But with so many, it’s hard to know where to begin or what to afford. In this ongoing series, Superhero Hype takes a look at some of the better selections and deals Amazon.com has running as of publication time. Please note that all deals are subject to change or sell out at any time based on supply and demand. These are the deals for Jan 13.

Ghostbusters [Blu-ray] [4K UHD]
$16.47

Listen! Do you smell something? Yes, there’s a larger box set coming, and that one’s pre-sold out on Amazon. But for all the purists who only love the first film, owning the 4K for less than $17 is a sweet deal. Now who you gonna call and tell about it?

Dune (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital)
$29.99

It’s going to take at least two years to get the rest of the story, so take multiple visits to Arrakis and pore over every detail in the meantime. Denis Villeneuve’s new tale on the material offers epic scope and sound, and the disc comes with multiple making-of featurettes.

The Suicide Squad 4K UHD
$15.99

Who’s ready for Peacemaker on HBO Max? If you missed the movie that introduced him, it’s super-cheap now, even on 4K. Buy James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad to get his director’s commentary and multiple extras, including a gag reel and many making-of featurettes. And perhaps prep for whatever his next DC TV show turns out to be!

Spider-Man: No Way Home [4K UHD]
$27.99

We don’t know when it’s coming out, or what extra features it may have. But what we do know is that you can reserve a copy now for whenever it does. The superhero phenomenon of the year makes Sony’s previous Spider-Man movies sort-of canon to the MCU retroactively. Fans of any cinematic form of the web-slinger are gonna need it.

The Hobbit: Motion Picture Trilogy [4K UHD]
$49.99

Fans of Peter Jackson’s (Lord of the) Ring tone may want to pick up the prequel trilogy, if only out of force of Hobbit. Expanding greatly on the source novel, the three cinematic adventures of a young Bilbo help lay the groundwork for the return of Sauron, and the war of the ring. Plus Gollum.

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
$49.98

Fifty bucks for 21 discs. That’s an epic adventure at a great price. Follow the entire journey of William Adama and the last surviving ships of the 13 Colonies. Will they escape the genocidal Cylons? Will they find the mysterious lost colony known as Earth? You might already know by now, but it’s time to relive the journey.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Collection (4K UHD + Digital Copy)
$164.99

Once folks get over the ending and whether or not it matched expectations, they might just remember what an epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones was. Beautifully mapped and pointedly hideous, it constantly kept us guessing and shifting our loyalties. And the dragons were cool.

Besides…spin-offs are coming.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage [4K UHD]
$25.20

It’s coming back to theaters, but you can own it outright instead, and watch safely at home. Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson both pull double-duty as lunatic alien symbiotes and their slightly crazed, mostly dutiful hosts. Tendrils will fly! Fangs will chomp! Actors will overact! And viewers get what they paid for.

Spider-Man (2002) / Spider-Man 2 (2004) / Spider-Man 3 (2007) – Set [4K UHD]

$59.99

Now part of the MCU! Sort of. Witness the first appearances of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, alongside a very different Venom played by Topher Grace. Before Marvel became a ubiquitous cinematic brand, Sam Raimi slung Tobey Maguire around the city on organic web-shooters for three movies, two of which remain beloved. Also featuring James Franco as Harry Osborn, Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy, and Elizabeth Banks as Betty Brant.

Eternals Feature 4K UHD
$29.99

Chloe Zhao might have made a movie too artsy for many MCU fans. But that’s what makes it stands out. Nobody can say that Eternals, which offers up a creation myth for the entire universe and suggests faith in supposedly flawless leaders is inevitably wrong, is just the same old thing. Extras include a commentary track and gag reel, and there’s a lot to talk about in the film itself.
