The future of the DC Universe is up in the air thanks to the Absolute Power event. This is why, for the next few months, Action Comics is looking to the history of the Man of Steel. To that end, Action Comics #1067 features two retro Superman stories, albeit ones with no common link beyond being set in the past.
The main story of Action Comics #1067 is written by Gail Simone, with art by Eddy Barrows. Titled “Challenge From the Stars – Part One,” the story is set in the Pre-Crisis era. This is shown through the mod wardrobe of Lois Lane, and the fact that she and Clark Kent work for WGBS rather than The Daily Planet.
The two reporters are interviewing teacher Jefferson Pierce (aka Black Lightning) about the budget cuts threatening a local youth center. Naturally, there’s more to the cuts than meets the eye, and Lois Lane smells chicanery afoot. All thoughts of legal malfeasance are put on hold, however, with the arrival of hostile aliens. This, naturally, is a job for Superman!

The back-up story of Action Comics #1067 is set in the immediate past, and more sedate in its pacing. Written by Rainbow Rowell, with art by Cian Tormey, “In Love. At Work,” is set in the modern day, with a married Lois and Clark. The focus here is upon the first couple of Metropolis and how they balance their jobs and their marriage.
